Black Lawrence Press seeks to publish intriguing books of literature and non-fiction: novels, short story collections, memoirs, history, social interest, poetry, and translations from the German and French.
On reading fees: While there is no reading fee for regular (general) submissions, it is very much appreciated when writers purchase a book or two from the press. This is not a requirement, but we certainly take notice of writers who demonstrate their support for the works we have already published. General submissions are read year-round. Please send book-length manuscripts to:
Please make sure that your submission packet includes the following:
cover letter with brief bio and contact information including e-mail
acknowledgments page for previous publications (if applicable)
a brief synopsis if submitting a novel or non-fiction manuscript
No electronic submissions. Please include a table of contents page and make sure that each page of your manuscript is numbered. Do not send SASE for manuscript; all manuscripts will be recycled. Include a valid
e-mail address so that we may contact you with a decision. We do not accept submissions sent by UPS or Fed Ex.
Simultaneous submissions are fine, but you must notify Black Lawrence Press immediately if your manuscript is accepted elsewhere for publication. Please let us know if you intend to submit your manuscript elsewhere so that we may make special note of it.
To get an idea of the kind of literary work that we are interested in, please see sample issues of The Adirondack Review, the on-line literary quarterly published by Black Lawrence. TAR publishes an eclectic mix of fresh voices in literature, as well as interviews, art, photography, and French and German translations. Poets whose work has appeared in the Review include: Denise Duhamel, Walt McDonald, Timothy Liu, Bob Hicok, D.C. Berry, Lee Upton, R.T. Smith, Lola Haskins, James Reidel, Ilya Kaminsky, as well as many newcomers.
We look forward to reading your work.
